Scott Lopes reviews the first trilogy in Dark Gallifrey, a brand new 24-part series from Big Finish
Dark Gallifrey: Morbius is a stunning and refreshing production by Big Finish. Giving us a glimpse at some of the most interesting and early lore in Doctor Who that Big Finish has ever offered and exploring the complex character of Morbius in a new, compelling way, the entire trilogy feels like one of their strongest in a long time.
One of the best parts of Morbius is its rich storytelling, immersing listeners in a gripping narrative filled with intrigue, drama, and twists. The character development is another positive, with writer Tim Foley giving us a fantastic set of new characters all with important and interesting stories. Gilda, played by the always wonderful Lara Lemon is a particular standout, while Foley makes Morbius himself a more compelling character than ever before, his writing bolstered by a fantastic performance from Samuel West.
The production values of Morbius are top-notch too. From stellar voice acting to immersive sound design and really good music from Howard Carter, Big Finish has created a high-quality audio drama that transports listeners into the story and keeps them on the edge of their seats throughout.
In addition, the thematic depth of the story is a significant positive aspect of Morbius. Through its exploration of power, corruption, and the consequences of one’s actions, the story prompts listeners to reflect on larger philosophical and ethical questions, adding a layer of intellectual intrigue to the narrative.
Overall, Morbius stands out as a compelling trilogy that excels in storytelling, character development, production values and thematic depth. It is a must-listen for fans of Doctor Who and anyone who appreciates a well-crafted and engaging narrative with some in depth lore, and is a fantastic start to Dark Gallifrey.
