George Hewitt gives his thoughts on the second instalment in the Torchwood Among Us series.

You can find reviews of the individual four episodes here:

There are almost no notes for this set. Ash Darby, Tim Foley, and James Goss have created a near-perfect quartet of stories, each of them with their own unique flavour, but coming together to form an engaging narrative that explores all of what Torchwood can be.

The format established in Among Us 1 is continued – an opening and closing episode that are heavily linked to the main arc of the series, while the middle two instalments focus on more minor aspects of the show and allow them to be explored in-depth to give listeners insight into previously undiscovered areas of Torchwood.

The standout from this boxset is undoubtedly Goss’s finale, which works wonders in its ability to link together plot points that previously seemed almost entirely unrelated. The pace and drive of the story are clear, and twists feel genuinely revelatory rather than being obvious or only included for shock value.

Among Us 2 sets up the next and final instalment perfectly, reintroducing Yvonne in the best way possible, establishing the stakes clearly, and retroactively making moments from the first set of stories make a lot more sense. Relistening to all eight episodes before heading into Among Us 3 is highly encouraged, as there are subtle lines of dialogue in episodes that previously went unnoticed but that will have listeners shocked and smiling with the additional context of Pariahs.

The cast is all on absolute top form throughout the set – with Mr Colchester, Ng, Orr, Tyler, and Yvonne running Torchwood, this may be the most talented set of main cast that the show has ever had. Every character is fully believable, and listeners get a real sense of how invested the actors are in their parts. This is a truly extraordinary ensemble, so fingers crossed they’ll remain at the helm for a while yet.

Overall, Among Us 2 is about as close to a perfect boxset as Big Finish has ever produced. Congratulations to all involved in this truly outstanding piece of audio drama, in particular to Scott Handcock for ensuring that his final outing as Torchwood director is so, so brilliant.

Rating: 5 out of 5.
